There was a time when all “_techno_” (EDM is the new and more marketable broad-genre term used today) was essentially one genre with a few sub-genre’s such as “Breakbeat” and “House”. Obviously, much has changed over the last two decades, with many spin-off and sub-sub-genres. It’s a nearly impossible feat to keep up.

It’s not just EDM with extensive genre branches, the rock genres and urban genres are plentiful and diverse.

As a DJ learning about genres, especially when trying to discover new music to incorporate into your sets, can prove useful. If you want your mix set to navigate from genre to genre seamlessly having a general understanding of the unique characteristics of each genre will help.

Every Noise At Once Interactive Genre Map

I spent nearly an hour digging into the ‘Every Noise At Once’ genre map, and if I didn’t have somewhere to be I may still be in deep. ‘Every Noise At Once’ describes their interactive genre map as such:

This is an ongoing attempt at an algorithmically-generated, readability-adjusted scatter-plot of the musical genre-space, based on data tracked and analyzed for 1386 genres by The Echo Nest. The calibration is fuzzy, but in general down is more organic, up is more mechanical and electric; left is denser and more atmospheric, right is spikier and bouncier.

Technical jargon aside the map is interesting to say the least, but beware – you may need a search party to dig you out. Be sure to click on any genre you see to hear a track of that genre.
